Engineering is one of the fastest-growing employment areas, for several strong reasons. As technical progress permeates industrial processes in manufacturing, food technology and agriculture, engineers are increasingly in demand. If you complete the electric power engineering program, for example, there are a variety of concentrations within alternative energy that may appeal to you such as wind power, mechanical engineering, or solar energy production. Further, due to advances in engineering technology, there is a growing shortage of graduates from accredited electric power engineering programs. Electrical engineers design and test new electrical equipment such as electric motors, communications systems, and power generators. Electronics engineering technicians, on the other hand, work in product evaluation and testing, using measuring and diagnostic equipment. They are also involved in the deployment of new equipment in factory automation. Electrical engineering has several sub-disciplines, including electric power engineering, software development, and control engineering. Electrical engineers with a bachelors degree earned an average salary of $95,230 in 2015, while electric power engineers with an associates degree earned $61,130 annually.

The field of electric power engineering deals with the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity. These include transformers, electric generators, electric motors, high voltage engineering, and power electronics. Electrical engineers maintain an electrical network called the power grid, that connects a variety of generators using high-voltage transmission lines. Signal processing relates to the analysis and manipulation of signals. Signals can be either analog, in which case the signal varies continuously, or digital, where the signal varies according to a series of discrete values. Control engineering applications range from flight systems of commercial airplanes to industrial automation.

Environmental Engineering

Environmental engineers use the principles of engineering, soil science, biology, and chemistry to develop solutions to public health problems. They are involved in efforts to improve recycling, manage waste disposal, and promote reclamation of contaminated sites after accidental contamination. Environmental engineering technicians carry out the plans that environmental engineers develop, including testing and operating equipment used to clean up air and water pollution. They may collect samples for testing, or they may study the environmental impact of proposed construction projects.

Environmental engineers may be called upon to design municipal water supply systems, and industrial wastewater treatment methods. They must evaluate the watershed, and balance the demand against available reserves. In the case of drinking water, treatment focuses on minimizing the risk of infectious diseases, and ensuring adequate distribution. In the field of air pollution management, environmental engineers devise ways to minimize emissions from vehicle exhausts and industrial gas stacks. To some extent, this field overlaps the attempt to decrease carbon dioxide levels, in order to combat global warming. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is one of the principal agencies that work with environmental engineers to protect and improve air, water, and overall environmental quality. Environmental engineering technicians holding an associates degree may earn $48,650 per year, while environmental engineers who have a bachelor's degree can earn as much as $79,500 annually.

Engineering Job Listings

The Fundamentals of Engineering exam should be taken immediately after earning a bachelors degree from an ABET-accredited program. Engineers who pass this exam are called engineers in training (EIT), or engineer interns. After meeting work experience requirements, engineer interns can attempt a second certifying exam, called the Principles and Practice of Engineering Exam. Thereafter, acquisition of a professional engineering license enables management of junior engineers, the ability to sign off on engineering projects, and provide services directly to the public. Wages vary by employer and location. Aside from salary, most engineering jobs include excellent benefits, as well as retirement plans.
